It was in 2001 that the Laguna II, a saloon aimed at embodying 'lifestyle' driving, was introduced into production. It was a time of tremendous innovation, featuring a host of new equipment capabilities that enabled customers enjoy the full benefits of their vehicle. The occupants were still required to use the keys to open and close their doors. This was a real obstacle for many and Renault engineers were determined to address it. The result was that they decided to incorporate a keycard that is contactless into their vehicles. They then developed an system that would allow drivers to unlock and start their cars with just a wave of hands. The card key can now be found in two of three Renault vehicles. If it's in the ignition barrel or on the centre console the car will unlock when the card is in close proximity and lock automatically when it is moved away. The keyless entry system The hands-free card from Renault was a groundbreaking piece of technology when it was launched 20 years ago. Its exterior is still identical, but the technology inside has had some upgrades to make it more user-friendly and less difficult to hack. It can't be used to unlock the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle, unless it is activated by the driver. The reason is that the radio signal antennas around the car are configured to detect whether the key is in or inside it. The key can still turn on the ignition from a distance however, it won't unlock the doors. This is for your safety. The wireless remote control transmissions of the system utilize the rolling-code. This reduces the risk of someone stealing the control message and then retransmitting it to gain access, but doesn't eliminate it.
